We now deliver to TikTok. So prep yourself for a lip sync battle!

02 Dec 2019

Today we are thrilled to announce we have begun distributing music to viral video app TikTok -  the internet’s leading destination for short-form videos.

With over 1.6 billion monthly video views in Australia and New Zealand alone, TikTok will provide artists who distribute through GYROstream the ability to expand their audience and encourage the creation of unique and exciting content.

While it may be known for its viral challenges and lip-syncing influencers, TikTok has established itself as a powerful marketing tool for musicians. Read on to find out more about the platform and what it can do for your music.

What is TikTok?

TikTok was launched in September 2016 and has since amassed over 800 million users - 41% of which are aged 16-24, making it the internet’s leading destination for short-form videos. Australia and New Zealand are not immune to the TikTok craze, the region boasts over 1.4 million active users and 1.6 billion video views each month. The majority of videos posted to the platform feature its users lip-syncing and dancing to popular songs or completing viral challenges. TikTok’s ‘Duet’ feature also encourages interaction between users, allowing them to post their videos side-by-side with another to create a duet or reaction video.

It’s the app that launched some of 2019’s most viral hits - where Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’ found its initial audience before spending 19 weeks at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100. It’s also the app that enabled Tones and I to spark a viral dance challenge set to ‘Dance Monkey’, a track that has since been used in over 1.9 million TikToks and rising.

TikTok as a Music Marketing Tool

With the majority of its content relying on catchy or relatable songs, TikTok became the launching-pad for some of 2019’s most viral hits. Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’ found its initial audience on TikTok when users were inspired to post videos of themselves dressed as cowboys, lip-syncing and dancing to the track. The song then spent 19 weeks at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100.

On a smaller scale, TikTok provides an opportunity for independent artists to be heard by its millions of users. Once your music is distributed to TikTok, anyone will be able to use it as the backing-track for their 15-second video which will then be shared with their followers. TikTok users will find your music by searching keywords or browsing ‘Discover’ playlists, as well as scrolling through the endless videos in the app’s ‘Explore’ page. Artists have achieved viral success by choreographing a memorable dance set to the song, encouraging fans to take-part in a unique challenge or recording duet videos with those using their track.

Music for TikTok

To make the most of the platform, it’s best to promote yourself with a track that is TikTok friendly. TikTok thrives on catchy or moody songs with memorable lyrics that can be lip-synced to or acted out. As TikTok content is limited to 15 seconds, the clip you select should make sense without the context of a whole song.

If you’re looking for a creative (and fun!) way to share your music and engage with your fans, it’s time to get TikTokking.

GYROstream can now deliver your music to TikTok - just select it as a store when uploading your track. Get started by signing up FREE to your dashboard HERE.
