Our Feature Album For April | The Jensens 'Hammer & Bird'

27 May 2021

Wowee! The Jensens have returned with their third studio album - Hammer & Blush. A very exciting release for the group as it represents a new direction sonically. Glittering synths, punchy lyrics and rolling drums are just some of the ways I would describe this album.

"Joe and I instinctually took different paths lyrically, yet there are many parallels to be found. Love and hate, technology and AI, time and space, hope and despair. It helps to give the album a continuity and focus."

- Nathan Kendall

Titular track, Bert & Ernie, explores band member Joe White’s experiences growing up queer in a Christian environment. Basing most of his relationship ideas on heteronormative ideals, Joe uses this song to express the feeling of  "extreme incompatibility with the world around," - Joe White.

The album was one of the last to be recorded at the iconic Bedlam Records studio before its closure. While it is sad to say goodbye to the studio, it has been nice to see them end with a bang, by producing one of the best albums to come out of Brisbane this year.

Hammer & Blush is an absolute triumph for The Jensens and I cannot wait to see what they come up with next.
