A beloved part of the Australian artist’s journey is to try and score the elusive golden goose that is a triple j first play.
A first play means that triple j want first dibs on the premiere of your single, how good is that?

It might go out on during Drive, during their Aus new music program Home and Hosed, or it might go out on triple j Unearthed’s TOPS, the possibilities are endless, the vibes are high, you think damn I’m cool, being a musician is the best, everyone loves me and I’ll never be unhappy again. I’m going to crack a beer and forget about this, but wait!

There are a few ways to really shoot this opportunity to the moon (leverage it and leverage it good) and here is a breakdown below:

Once the time and date of your new release date is locked in - get sharing!

The goal here is to get your listeners to text triple j and tell them how excited they are to hear you on the radio. It should look something like this:

Let’s break down the elements!

  • Put the cover of the single that being premiered on there
  • Slap a triple j sticker over it (you can do this easily in Canva and associated editing platforms)
  • Make sure that you include in your caption what date and time your song will be premiering. It’s always good to include the region with this to help out your interstate fans (e.g. AEDT or ACST).
  • Find the phone number for the text line of the show that your song is debuting on, share it in your caption and encourage your fans to text into triple j about the song and share their enthusiasm with loads of explosion emojis and adjectives - note that TOPS does not have a text line.

We recommend making this post 12-24 hours before the song goes live! This means the information will be fresh in people’s minds and they probably won’t get super excited then totally forget.
