In music, every song has two sides that generate income — and understanding the difference between them is crucial if you want to collect everything you’re owed.

Let’s break it down .

The Two Copyrights in Every Song

Master Royalties = Money From The Recording

This is income generated when your recording is used - streamed, sold, or licensed.

Who earns it?
  • Performing artist
  • Record label (if signed)
  • Producer (if they have collaborator splits)
  • Distributor

Types of Master Royalties:

Publishing Royalties = Money From the Songwriting

This is income from the use of the composition — the lyrics, chords, and melody -  no matter who performs it.

Who earns it?
  • Songwriters
  • Co-writers
  • Music publishers
  • Publishing administrators (if appointed)
Types of Publishing Royalties

💡 Yes – streaming platforms generate both a mechanical and performance royalty on the publishing side.

Real-World Example:

You write and record a track called 'Golden Hour':

  • It gets streamed on Spotify
    → You earn:
    • Recording Royalties (also known as master royalties or streaming royalties)  – from Spotify via your distributor (e.g  GYROstream etc.)
    • Publishing royalties – both mechanical and performance royalties via APRA AMCOS
  • It’s played on FM radio in Australia
    → You earn:
    • Neighbouring rights royalties (master side) – via PPCA on behalf of the owner of the recording
    • Performance royalties (publishing side) – via APRA AMCOS on behalf of the songwriter/composer
  • A brand wants to use it in an ad
→ They need a sync license from:
